Target Audience
This activity is designed for pulmonologists, radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists, internists, thoracic surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and other medical professionals involved in the screening and evaluation of high-risk patients as well as the diagnosis, staging and/or management of patients with lung cancer.
Overall Goals
This one day CME accredited educational course will focus on lung cancer, its screening, diagnosis and staging, as well as bronchoscopic, surgical, radiation-based and oncologic treatment approaches. Lectures will be given by recognized experts who will address the current clinical practice and will provide updates on key recent findings in regards to paradigms in screening, early detection, diagnostics and treatment. Also, the most current surgical, interventional pulmonary and radiation technologies to stage, treat and palliate disease, including recent advances in chemotherapy and targeted therapeutics to manage advanced disease. This course will be organized into six didactic sessions, and attendee participation and interaction will be facilitated through Q&A, audience polling, interactive panel discussions and case presentations. Participants will learn and understand the screening of patients at risk for lung cancer, the work-up of patients with suspected lung cancer and the management plan of patients with an established diagnosis.
Learning Objectives
After the program, participants will be able to:- Identify populations of patients at high-risk of disease and learn proper algorithms for the appropriate screening steps for this population
- Discuss the strengths and limitations of different invasive and non-invasive staging techniques
- Understand recent developments in the histological and molecular classification of lung cancer
- Recognize innovative surgical, interventional radiological and radiation based strategies for the curative treatment of patients with poor lung function
- Select patients appropriately for various interventional and surgical approaches for palliation of intra-thoracic complications of lung cancer
- Recognize the benefit and indications of adjuvant modality therapies
- Demonstrate knowledge of multidisciplinary treatment modalities for patients with locally advanced disease
- Understand patient selection issues for systemic therapy
- Demonstrate insight into ongoing novel clinical studies for advanced disease
- Understand the impact of palliative interventions in the management of patients with advanced lung cancer
